Waco, Texas is not supposed to have waves. It’s landlocked, sun-baked, and sits squarely in the middle of a state that has never once been accused of being a surf destination. And yet, somewhere between the ranch land and the I-35, a 450-acre resort has quietly become one of the most serious surf facilities on the planet. The Shredmill, Waco Surf’s newest addition powered by FlowRider’s deep-water wave technology, FlowSurf, is the latest proof that geography is no longer an excuse.
Where the Stoke Goes Global
The Shredmill marks a defining moment in what is proving to be a landmark year for FlowSurf technology. It joins two other landmark FlowSurf debuts this year: the boutique indoor intimacy of Surflux in Luxembourg, and the ultra-premium scale of ADRENA on the Red Sea. Three venues. Three completely different worlds. One wave.
The First of Its Kind: How FlowSurf Powers the Shredmill
While the Waco surf pool offers the grandeur of a traveling set, the Shredmill offers something entirely different: the never-ending session. As the inaugural U.S. site for FlowSurf, the Shredmill allows riders to use actual surfboards with fins. Far from mimicry, the smooth flow removes the turbulence found in older standing wave designs, delivering a rippable 10-meter-wide (roughly 33 feet) face where beginner and pro surfers alike can practice wrapping turns, 360s, and aerials without ever having to paddle back to the lineup. The wave machine features 4 different settings, ranging from 3.5-5 feet to suit any skill level.
The Engineering Secret Hidden in a Mangrove Root
The engineering story behind FlowSurf starts somewhere unexpected: a mangrove root. FlowRider’s engineers observed that the root structures of mangrove trees have a natural smoothing effect on water flow and that became the foundation for eliminating the turbulence that plagues most stationary wave systems. Developed in partnership with French hydraulic specialists Hydrostadium, the result is a wave that runs at industry-leading energy efficiency for hours, without the brutal power draw typically associated with inland surf. The ocean figured this out millions of years ago. FlowRider just took notes and the numbers back it up: half the industry’s energy consumption, the lowest water consumption in its class.
An All-Day Anchor: The Surf-Stay Evolution
Waco Surf has mastered the art of the surf-stay. From the wedge slides to the legendary lazy river, the facility was already a destination, but the addition of the Shredmill adds a new interactive social layer. Located within view of the surf cafe, it turns a lunch break into a front-row seat for a high-performance show, creating a true waterfront downtown where the energy of the session spills over into the hotel decks and the dive bar.
Whether you’re a Desperado resident whose backyard backs up to the lagoon, or someone who just booked a flight specifically to ride this wave, the message is the same: the Shredmill was built for you. Waco Surf has already proven that world-class waves don’t require an ocean. With FlowSurf in the mix, it’s proving something bigger. That the future of surfing might just be built on dry land, with a mangrove root blueprint and a Texas-sized appetite for what comes next.
